Our History

Hamilton Hindin Greene is proud of the history of the firm which is an amalgamation of many stockbroking practices spanning over 100 years of private sharebroking in Canterbury.

Frank Graham Snr and Frank Graham Jnr entered stockbroking as a sideline to their ship chartering and insurance agency business and were foundation members of the Stock Exchange of Canterbury in 1900. Following the death of Frank Graham Snr in 1915 his son took over the firm. Frank Graham Jnr was still a member of the Exchange and actively trading at the time of his death in 1953, aged 78. Frank Graham Jnr dominated the Christchurch Stock Exchange for 30 years as New Zealand’s longest serving Chairman – from 1911 until 1934 and again from 1939 until 1946.

The firm of Hamilton & Hamilton started in business in the early 1920’s with the Partnership of Mr E H S Hamilton and Mr G Hamilton. After the war in 1946 Geoffrey’s son Derek joined the firm.

In 1962 Hamilton & Hamilton amalgamated with J B Hindin (incorporating A J Scott & Co.). This partnership was joined by J M T Greene and subsequently the firm’s name was changed to Hamilton Hindin Greene.

In 1966 Frank Graham & Son merged with Griffiths Shand and traded under the name of Griffiths Shand Lewis & Riley; the Partners being Mr J H Griffiths, Mr H J Shand, Mr A L Lewis and Mr R J Riley. Jim Griffiths, Jack Shand and Jim Riley were all appointed “Chairman of Christchurch Stock Exchange” during their careers. Geoff Wilkinson joined the partnership in 1973.

In 1978 Hamilton Hindin Greene & Co. and Griffiths Shand & Riley merged to form Christchurch’s largest broking firm under the name of Hamilton Hindin Greene. Richard Boulton became a partner in 1984, having joined the firm in 1980 after seven years of merchant banking in Wellington. Brian O’Malley joined the partnership later in 1984 after having been a member of the Stock Exchange since 1973.

In 1998 Hamilton Hindin Greene and Egden Wignall & Co merged. Mr Grant Williamson, who joined Egden Wignall & Co in 1987, became a partner in the new amalgamated firm.

On the 31st October 2006, Hamilton Hindin Greene became a limited liability company trading as Hamilton Hindin Greene Limited. Today the firm continues to be proudly Christchurch-owned.
